Portraits 4
Here is an example of a
polychrome portrait. Painted
sculptured portraits became taboo
in the modern world and the idea
was certainly frowned upon when I
was at art college. Although I
would model a portrait differently if
it is to be painted, this can work
well and I think the taboo is largely
to do with people in recent
centuries not realising how much
of the sculpture from earlier times
had originally been coloured. It
was certainly common for
sculpture, including portraiture, to
be coloured in the ancient
civilisations and in the Middle
Ages. In many surviving examples
from these times the colour has
worn off.
